Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s head of contemporary art and senior director, said: “It seems we have just been Banksy-ed. He also added that he wasn’t aware of the trick Banksy played on them.

The piece of art has become one of the best images of Banksy’s collection. Now that the painting has been shredded to pieces, no one knows what will become of the famous artwork. Sotheby’s told the world that in the history of auction, this was the first of such a strange occurrence.

Branczik said they have never witnessed such a situation previously where a piece of artwork would unexpectedly shred itself after obtaining an achievement for the artist. They are still frantically trying to figure out the meaning of this absurd incident within the auction context.

Sotheby’s auction house told the media that they were currently discussing with the buyer concerning the next steps to take. However, art market watchers think the shredded painting could even worth more than the unscathed form.

Happy Choppers, another painting by Banksy, was sold during the New York version of Sotheby’s auction. The happy choppers artwork was intact after the sale for $735,000 that same Friday.
